How to Choose a Chandelier: Size, Style and Placement Guide

1. Get the size right first

Under-sized chandeliers are the single most common mistake we see. For a living room, add the room's length and width in feet; the total in inches is a good chandelier diameter. For a dining chandelier, aim for a diameter roughly 12 inches less than the table's shortest side.

2. Hang it at the right height

Over a dining table: bottom of the chandelier 30–34 inches above the tabletop. In a foyer or open area with no furniture below: at least 7 ft of clearance from the floor. For double-height foyers, centre the fixture between the two floor levels.

3. Match style to architecture, not to trends

Crystal cascade chandeliers suit classical, Art Deco and Indo-French interiors. Linear pendants and orbital fixtures suit modern, minimal and contemporary homes. Brushed brass and matte black are the safest metals for 2026.

4. Bulb temperature and dimming

2700K for living and bedroom chandeliers. 3000K for dining. Always insist on a dimmer — a chandelier without a dimmer is a lost opportunity.

5. Weight, canopy and installation

Anything above 15 kg needs a properly reinforced ceiling hook, not just a false-ceiling box. Ask your showroom for the exact weight and mounting spec before finalising.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Can I put a chandelier in a bedroom?
Yes — as long as it's proportional and dimmable. Avoid heavily downward-glaring designs above the bed.
Are crystal chandeliers still in style in 2026?
Yes, especially minimalist crystal cascades in brass frames. They read as luxurious rather than dated when paired with modern furniture.
